Useful kepresses in Ms Windows 2000/XP

This table will list useful key presses in Ms Windows 2000/XP. Some of these key presses will work in earlier versions of Ms Windows as well.

N.B : The + symbol in the table below means to hold down the first key and then to tap the second key mentioned. So for example : SHIFT + 3 means to hold down the SHIFT key and tap the 3 key once and release the SHIFT key afterwards.

Key Press Description of Key Press
ALT + TAB Cycles through currently opened applications. Once released the application selected will become available
ALT + F4 Closes an application or if none are open will generally prompt to shutdown MS Windows.
CTRL + ESC Acts in the same manner as the Windows Flag key by opening the Start Menu
ALT + SPACE Displays the Restore menu of an opened application
CTRL + F4 Once in an application, if it allows for multiple windows to be opened at once, this key press usually closes each of these down when ever it is used.
Window Key + r Opens run command box
F5 Refreshes the desktop display
TAB When the desktop is in focus, this key can cycle between the desktop , start menu and any opened applications that are showing on the task bar. It only needs to be tapped once each time to move focus.
